This is an opportunity for youth ages 14-21 to volunteer at a community garden during the spring and summer.
GreenThumb Youth Leadership Council participants will learn firsthand from community gardeners how to maintain and grow a healthy garden. Youth will also work on a project in the garden that will involve gaining skills such as carpentry, composting, environmental stewardship, community organizing, and event management.
Virtual trainings on youth leadership and food justice will begin in the winter. There will be a kickoff event in the spring and a graduation ceremony in the fall. It’s recommended that participants volunteer in a garden twice a month. Participating in the YLC is a great way to make a positive impact in the community, earn community service hours, make friends, learn new skills, and have fun!
To apply, visit the Youth Leadership Council page on the Generation NYC website. Scroll down to the very bottom of the page and in the “Choose a YLC to apply for” dropdown menu, select Green Thumb (it’s the last one listed). Apply and you will be matched with a local community garden!
