May 2019 - Art in the Gardens - First Street Garden

About the Garden:

First Street Garden is a GreenThumb community garden in the Lower East Side neighborhood of Manhattan.  Want to see the murals in person?  Come to our Planting Design for Gardens in the Shade workshop on Saturday June 22nd from 1 - 4PM!  If you are interested in becoming a member of First Street Garden, please contact Anthony Reuter - GreenThumb Senior Outreach Coordinator - anthony.reuter@parks.nyc.gov or 212-602-5324.  The garden is looking for more members to join!

 

About the Art:

The LES Girls Club teamed up with 17 artists in 2011 to paint these murals as a way to celebrate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which occurs on November 25th every year. The mural series depicts women who have made significant contributions to society in various ways.

About the Artists:

The Lower East Side (LES) Girls Club was founded in 1996 and was created as a haven for girls and young women in the neighborhood, a place where they can come together to learn, grow and enjoy themselves.  The murals were a collaboration between mural artists and the teenage members of the Girls Club.
