Did you know that late fall is a great time to plant fruit trees? This virtual workshop led by artist and orchardist Sam Van Aken will cover the basics of planting fruit trees, including how to choose the right location, what size hole to dig, how deep to plant, and tips on watering to ensure your tree makes it through the winter and thrives in the spring.
Please RSVP to receive the link to join the webinar.
Proper planting will play a key role in the creation of Sam Van Aken’s upcoming project on Governors Island: a public orchard of 50 hybrid fruit trees containing rare and heirloom varieties that once grew in and around the NYC area, but which have all but vanished due to the rise of industrial-scale agriculture and a changing climate. After the orchard is planted, additional trees will be given away to community gardens across the city, reintroducing these local varieties of peaches, plums, apricots, cherries and apples back into the neighborhoods where they grew hundreds of years ago. In this workshop, you’ll learn how these special trees should be planted and cared for once in the ground, as well as best practices for planting fruit trees of all kinds.
